Law of Polarity

In this episode of Just Call Jenna, Jenna explores the Law of Polarity—the idea that everything in life has an opposite, from joy and sadness to fear and courage, comfort and growth. She examines the internal tug-of-war between a brain wired to seek safety and familiarity and a soul that seeks expansion and transformation. Rather than viewing difficult experiences as mistakes, Jenna invites listeners to recognize the value of contrast and consider how some of life’s most painful chapters can ultimately become sources of wisdom, purpose, compassion, and self-worth.

Jenna also explores the brain’s natural negativity bias and how shifting our attention from the problem to the opportunity can begin to change the way we experience challenges. Fear can reveal courage, loneliness can point toward connection, confusion toward clarity, and scarcity toward abundance. This episode encourages listeners to stop labeling every experience as simply good or bad and instead ask what it might be teaching them—because growth rarely feels comfortable while it’s happening, and the experiences we once wanted to avoid may ultimately help us become a better version of ourselves.

Welcome back. Today I'm going to talk about a universal law, the law of polarity. It's one of the most misunderstood laws, I think, out there I'm gonna talk about understanding how this applies to life. We're gonna go from the perspective of Jenna, where if you understand where I see it, I see I see life as almost like a seesaw, right? There's varying degrees and experiences are moving back and forth across the seesaw all day long. And so you're just kind of teeter-tottering through life in that polarity, right? Things are not good or bad. There's just the experience But you get to determine that and I look at things like I don't want to go too far to either side of the seesaw because if I go too far to the right, I'm gonna fall off the left. If I go too far to the left I'm gonna fall off the right. That's just the way I see it. So when I talk about the law of polarity, to me that's kind of like a scale or a seesaw. What's on either side?
“Things are not good or bad. There's just the experience”
And I think it's one of the most misunderstood universal laws out there, but I also think it's one of the most important that when you understand it, it really helps you with all the other principles I talk about. So your soul has a different agenda in the law of Polarity than your brain. Your brain needs to label A or B. Your soul just wants something different. It wants to expand and grow. And intuit and create. Kind of like the idea of like your right brain versus your left brain. Like logic versus creativity, right? We all know as humans there's opposite ends of everything and I think that that's where a lot of debates and things get into. So a lot of allowance will come in and just allowing things to be what they are but in polarity it really what it teaches us is that everything has an opposite every light has a dark every joy has a sadness Every success, a failure, every fear, a courage, every comfort, a growth, every black a white, every up a down.
“Your brain needs to label A or B. Your soul just wants something different. It wants to expand and grow. And intuit and create.”
So I just experienced this big time in my life This week. I went to the doctors for some cognitive testing because as a stroke patient, you do this as like a recovery preventative measure. And so they tested my vision of going right to left. Great I've made major strides. My vision going up and down, not so great. Well, they believe that because I train my brain by all the reading to read right to left I'm doing well there. But the up and down, I'm still struggling with that seesaw or balance between the two. And that's my own individual journey. But it's a place where the law of polarity comes in. Life is very much cyclical, but the law of polarity is about that contrast. I think in human nature we try to eliminate the negative and focus on the positive. But what if those experiences aren't mistakes, but just really part of the process?
“But what if those experiences aren't mistakes, but just really part of the process?”
Because your brain seeks comfort, but your soul seeks growth. Those are the two ends of the polls, right? Your brain wants comfort and to keep you safe, to keep you alive and predict to do that. And your soul wants to grow, Expand, become better, greater. Your brain is wired for survival and not happiness. But your soul is designed to keep you happy and not care whether you're about survival. It's not its primary goal So those are the two ends of the spectrum, and I think we all just need to figure out a way to sort of find that balance, but understanding the contrast exists
So from a neuroscience perspective, your nervous system loves what's familiar. It wants to predict. That's how it decides what's safe. What's predictable is safe. Your brain actually conserves energy by creating habits and routines. Even if those patterns and routines are not good for you It doesn't care. Oh, you repeated this three times? Great, I'm gonna help you repeat it a fourth and use less energy to do it next time. Your brain is looking for those pathways. That's kind of what those connections are, or the neuroplasticity of rewiring habits, right? It doesn't care if the habit is walking 15 minutes a day to you know getting your 10,000 steps and making you healthy, or if it's drinking two Cokes in the morning. It doesn't care. It doesn't know the difference. It's just gonna say, oh, you did this today. I'm gonna make it easier to do it again tomorrow. And even easier on the fifth time because the more you repeat it, the easier it's gonna get. That is wiring.
So I think that you have to understand that in contrast in the law of polarity, right? Your brain doesn't know right or left, good or bad. It it doesn't know it is not designed to understand that, but your soul understands polarity. Your soul has a different agenda. The soul is here to Expand, to become, to create, to be, to exist, to learn lessons, to intuit All those creative joys that exist are from the soul. All the predictable logical patterns are the brain. So if you think about it from my perspective, the soul and the brain are each different ends of the seesaw. So I have to figure out how to intersect those two to live my life because the polarity is they're different ends of the seesaw.
These things actually create an internal tug of war It's a polarity within you. Your brain says stay safe, but your soul whispers, there's more for you. There's growth. Neither is right or wrong. They're just experiences. It's simply trying to accomplish different things. But they are the different sides. That's some of the internal tug of war that you feel. Your brain says one thing, your logic mind says that thing. If you're out of survival mode But your soul is grow, expand. It doesn't care what the brain thinks about logic. The soul does not care about logic. The brain does not care about expansion and happiness These are polarities, these are different ends of the spectrum. It's an internal tug of war that I think every human being fights every day. But you're gonna accept, neither is right or wrong They're just simply trying to accomplish different things.
You know, you might have two different parents who think two different things. Mom thinks one thing, dad thinks another. Neither parent is right or wrong. They're just trying to accomplish different things. Your boss and your spouse might have different views for you. Neither is right or wrong. They just are trying to accomplish different things. That's a big portion of understanding the law of polarity. Neither end of the seesaw is right or wrong. They are just trying to accomplish different things. One is going up, one is going down, and they're teeter-tottering all the time.
So law of polarity is understanding the contrast, understanding that within you, whether you like it or not There's an internal tug of war that's happening every day. What society, culture, and the brain tells you to do, and those conditioned responses, and what your soul really wants to do You're fighting that tug of war every day, whether you like it or not. So the law of polarity is understanding that both of those things exist and understanding that neither is right or wrong, just trying to accomplish different things That I think that law is massively misunderstood by people. But I'm supposed to do this. I should do this. I should be this. It's not right or wrong, but what's the contrast to that? Right?
“You're fighting that tug of war every day, whether you like it or not.”
You know, people talk about cycle of life and those kind of things. Life and death, right? They're different ends of the spectrum. Neither one is right or wrong. They're just trying to accomplish different things. You're being birthed into life, you're ending life That is an extreme example, but you get it. A seed is planted, a tree grows. They are trying to accomplish different things. Once the tree has grown, it's going to drop seed pods that are going to plant themselves to give other trees. There's a cycle that comes out of the polarity, but they're trying to accomplish different things, right? An artist and a corporate CEO are trying to accomplish different things. Neither one is right or wrong. They're just trying to accomplish different things.
But I think this is why the law of polarity is misunderstood. We have so many judgments about wanting things to be right or wrong or thinking about the scales of justice and trying to give a good or bad heaven and hell, dark and light, good and evil. I don't Think that that matters. I think that it's just understanding their different ends of the spectrum. If there is something that is dark There is also a light. One of my favorites is thinking about the yin-yang, right? If you look at it, it's a black and white circle, but in the black half is a white circle. In the white is a black circle. The idea is that in every dark there is a light. In every light there is a dark. There is a contrast
“The idea is that in every dark there is a light. In every light there is a dark. There is a contrast”
If you talk to artists about color theory, they will love to tell you all about contrast. But the law of polarity is just that. I think we misunderstand it because we put so many human judgments on it, wanting things to be right or wrong or the way we see them, but it's just accepting that there's two ends to the spectrum. There's literally contrast. There are two ends. When there's a scale, you know, there's two sides. That's why I like a seesaw because it helps me understand there's a board. And if I go too far one way or too far the other I'm gonna fall off the seesaw, but that's how I think about it. That's how I think about balance or rhythm in my life. It's just the teetering and accepting things as they are.
If there's something dark There will be something light in it. For example, I just experienced something in my personal life that was dreary, heavy, awful Stressful. I fought every urge to beat myself up and tell myself it was all my fault, right? And trying to fix it. But understanding that there was a gift in that that is going to move me on to something better because I experience that. I'm coming out of the heavy of it. Not fully out of there, but I'm headed towards the light at the end of the tunnel. I use that because it's not labeling that experience as good or bad. It's just an experience And there is a gift in it that something better will come out of it.
“It's just an experience And there is a gift in it that something better will come out of it.”
But I think we put all these judgments on it from a human level and really understanding the law of Polarity. It's kind of like the law of gravity. It exists whether you like it or not. There's a contrast. In every light there is a dark. In every dark, there is a light. Neither is right or wrong. They just have a different purpose.
So why does contrast matter? Why does it matter that there's different poles and there's a contrast? Because can you imagine trying to explain being warm to someone who has never felt cold Can you imagine trying to explain peace to someone who's never felt chaos? Or maybe you can imagine trying to explain to a kid who has no awareness of an experience You know, these are the consequences of your choices. This will happen if you do it. Well, they may not have that experience. They have no awareness. So that is why contrast matters If you experience warm, you can know what it feels like to be cold. If you experience chaos, you can know the value of peace. Without contrast, life almost has no meaning. How do you define the experience in your senses, in your humanity, if you don't know what it's like to be on the opposite end of the spectrum?
I think this is why people who have been through traumas are much more understanding. felt like to be there and what it feels like to be here. I think that's a reminder to anybody who's going through a hard time. We all go through them. You're not gonna be here forever. It's not going to last forever There is a contrast to it. Stay strong, keep it moving, because you will come out of this. But I think that's a big thing of contrast.
We recognize confidence because we have lived through insecurities. We appreciate health because we've experienced illness. We value love because we've experienced loss and heartbreak. That is why contrast matters. You basically can't experience one without the other. Again, back to that thought of the yin-yang. I think about the yin yang a lot because that's what it reminds me of. When something Is dark, there is a light in it. When something is light, there is a dark. It's not doomsday of waiting for the shoe to fall, kind of a thing. It's just understanding there's a contrast. And because of that contrast, I'm allowed to experience this. Because I've experienced I'm A near-death experience, I understand the value of life that I didn't understand before. Without that contrast, my awareness was not there. Contrast gives life depth Without it, everything just sort of becomes flat, boring.
Your lowest moments actually create wisdom. They create your higher self. They create that wisdom of knowing what to do. So there is a contrast in that that absolutely matters. When something's heavy and you've gone through a dark night of the soul, when you get on the other side You value it differently, and you've learned the lessons that come from that.
“Your lowest moments actually create wisdom. They create your higher self.”
Most of us try to erase painful chapters from our lives. Often those chapters are the very foundation of our purpose. And not acknowledging them keeps us unaware of the blessing. Again, remember that in that dark there's a light. So there is a gift in those heaviest horrible moments because there is a contrast. Contrast gives portions of life. The greatest gifts come from the farthest Deepest, darkest, heaviest things. That is the law of polarity. It says that everything exists with an opposite And that contrast is what actually gives life meaning in my view.
“Most of us try to erase painful chapters from our lives. Often those chapters are the very foundation of our purpose.”
So maybe a divorce taught you your self-worth, or losing a job led you to your true calling. Or surviving an illness like me gave you more compassion than you ever had before. I learned to be compassionate for myself. I don't know that I ever would have got that lesson If I didn't have to go through what I went through. So I'm hoping I can teach all of you to be more compassionate for yourself, understanding that there are gifts in the heart. hard things. Pain wasn't my destination, but it was my teacher. So I'm hoping I can teach you without having to experience that pain.
“Pain wasn't my destination, but it was my teacher.”
So just stop labeling everything as good or bad. Eliminate always and never from your vocabulary. That's probably step one. Just stop saying this always happens. Oh, this happened again. This never goes my way. Huh, this went my way today. Just eliminate always and never. Because That will help you stop labeling things as good or bad. Getting out from the far distances to more in the balance of it That's kind of the law of polarity. Those poles exist, whether you do anything about them or not. Many situations really aren't good or bad. They're just experiences, so look for the contrast.
So, an example of that might be You know, we all beat ourselves up for I coulda woulda shoulda. Well, maybe if you eliminated always and never, that wouldn't be a big deal So try to go for more often than not. So for example, on my health journey of making a new lifestyle, how I eat, how I exercise, how I move about my life, a full lifestyle switch. Instead of trying to be perfect every day. It's understanding that if I don't do this, my seesaw's gonna tip too far one way. So more often than not, do I eat the right breakfast? More often than not, do I sleep Right, more often than not, honestly now it's almost every night that I sleep well.
Before the stroke, I think I was lucky to get three hours of sleep a night. I was up all night doing things Ruminating things in my mind. I mean, there's a night that's off, but more often than not, I go to bed at the same time, sleep eight hours, and wake up without an alarm. Now did that happen overnight? No. But eliminating always and never and just going, these things aren't good or bad, they just are. It's just simply an experience Look for the contrast. The contrast for me was how I used to sleep and how I sleep now. It's like a whole different person, but that's contrast. That's the gift in the bed. I mean, I really wish I didn't have it to have a stroke to get a great sleep pattern. That would have been excellent. Would have preferred it that way. But there is a gift that came out of it. As simple as that is
So eliminate always and never. Don't label things as good or bad. Just notice the contrast. What I used to be and where I'm at now. Look for the difference. If you try to compare to where you want to be and where you're at, that's gonna create a whole other shift of polarity. But you can Look backwards only to see how far you've come, not to ruminate on coulda woulda shoulda. But I think that's polarity. It is a universal law. It's like gravity, right? What goes up must come down. That's a piece of polarity.
Now, I know that's probably extreme for a lot of you, but it's It's really that simple. To each good there is a bad. To every season, there's a different season, right? To every open door, there's a closed door, right? The door opens and shuts. You know, you start at point A, you get to point B. Those are polarities. Everything has a contrast. So don't label those situations or good or bad or in the contrast Just accept. And if you catch yourself using the words always or never, don't beat yourself up for it. Just go, okay, that was a mistake and move on. Because before you know it, you will not be using always and never in your vocabulary
Our brains naturally focus on the negativity bias. The negativity bias is in the brain. It's designed to find the negative Because the negative helps keep you safe. You're wired for that. So we naturally focus on the problem. That's just how the brain is wired. But when we understand the law of polarity We actually interrupt that pattern in our brain. We interrupt the loop that happens. When we begin asking, what's the opportunity in this challenge? What's the lesson? When you apply that curiosity You interrupt that negative ruminating poor me thinking that's gonna happen. You interrupt the victim mentality that the brain is gonna go to. It's just gonna go to the negative. It's going to go to the worst case scenario. And we've all conditioned ourselves there, kind of the way in the culture and society we live in.
But I think you just Just interrupt that pattern. Understanding the law of polarity is about interrupting the pattern. Be curious. It doesn't matter if this is good or bad. That shift will literally challenge the neural pathways in your brain and it strengthens over time. Yes, I studied the The neuroscience of this. Remember, I have a certificate in neuroscience coaching. I'm certified to teach you about that. So it's about shifting your neural pathways.
The law of polarity tells us the opposite you seek already exists. If you want to be rich, but you feel poor, the opposite already exists. If you want to be skinny and fit and you're not today The opposite already exists. If you want to be successful and you don't feel like it, that opportunity exists The law of polarity tells you that because you feel this, the opposite is already true. Your job is to understand the contrast and let it be.
“The law of polarity tells us the opposite you seek already exists.”
So if you're experiencing Fear, courage already exists. The law of polarity says so. If you're experiencing loneliness, connection already exists. If you're experiencing confusion, clarity already exists If you're experiencing scarcity, abundance exists. So the law of polarity says what you're feeling, the opposite is already true. The opposite is not somewhere outside of you. It's not, it's not external. It's simply waiting for your attention. It wants you to be aware that the opposite exists.
“If you're experiencing fear, courage already exists. The law of polarity says so. If you're experiencing loneliness, connection already exists. If you're experiencing confusion, clarity already exists If you're experiencing scarcity, abundance exists.”
This is where your RAS filter will come back in. Energy flows where your attention goes. So if you're focused on fear instead of understanding that courage is out there and focusing on the courage, that's gonna happen. There's a great movie with Morgan Freeman out there where he's talking to somebody and he says You know, if you want patience and you pray for patience, does God give you patience or does he give you opportunities to be patient if you're feeling fearful? Does God give you courage or does he give you opportunities to be courageous? I think about that a lot because in the law of polarity and the Ras filter, where your attention goes Where your energy flows is where your attention goes. So if I'm going to focus on fear, I'm going to find all the reasons to be fearful. If I'm going to focus on courage, I'm going to find all the reasons to be courageous.
So again, remember the law of polarity teaches us that if you fill one, the opposite actually exists. It's a universal law. It's not a is this up for debate? It just exists. It reminds us that life is not happening against us. It's actually happening for us. Or like I like to think, life is happening through me. These experiences are life. Every challenge contains the seed of transformation. Every ending carries the possibility of a new beginning. Every fear has an equal opportunity for courage.
“Every challenge contains the seed of transformation. Every ending carries the possibility of a new beginning. Every fear has an equal opportunity for courage.”
Okay, have a stroke. There's an opportunity to become Jenna 2.0 But these contrasts, the law of polarity exists. When I was feeling down and heavy and Wasn't sure if I could make it. I was aware that there was an opportunity the future me could be, right? That there was the existence Right now I may have been at one side, down, and can't even go to the bathroom by myself. But there is a future where I can do that because I'm aware that it exists. If I'm aware that I can't do this, then I'm aware there's a version of me that can't. That is the law of polarity actually existing. It's just saying there's a contrast. I think we all try to judge which side of the equation we're on. It's just being aware the law of polarity is simply being aware that that opposite exists.
Your mind may be asking for comfort, while your soul may be asking for expansion. But growth rarely feels comfortable while it's happening. One day you'll look back and realize the very thing you thought would destroy you is absolutely Actually what created the better version of you. As adults, we can probably look back to times in our lives. And I can remember like a broken heart I had in my twenties and thinking It was never gonna end. Nobody was gonna ever love me. Poor me. I thought my life was over. Those obsessive, ruminating thoughts I don't really remember what they were, but I can remember it felt heavy. I can remember listening to 80s love songs and thinking that my world was gonna end.
Well, a couple years later I met someone, got married, had kids. Granted I got divorced, but The whole point is the gifts come and we tend to focus on the always or never of it. I can remember I was probably like, I'm never gonna find someone for me. I'm always gonna be alone blotty blotty blotty. But when you remove those thoughts from your things, it's just understanding the opposite exists. If I had a known then that because I had a broken heart, that my self-love would come later in life from it, I don't think I could have told you that then. I don't think I could have told you that five years ago, but understanding the law of polarity, because one existed, the opposite has to be true.
Life is happening Through me. No experience is good or bad. It just is. And by eliminating always and never out of my vocabulary, I don't let my seesaw tilt too far So the law of polarity, remember contrast comes in it, but it tells us things are not good or bad, but if one exists the opposite must be true. And that is the law of polarity.
